Here are a few ways you can make a contribution in Chicago!
Greater Chicago Food Depository
Saturday, July 14
1:30 - 4:30 pm
Join SLA Illinois at the Greater Chicago Food Depository for an afternoon of service to Chicago. Sign up now!
Can't Make the Greater Chicago Food Depository excursion, but you still want to volunteer in the Chicago community? Stop by the SLA Illinois booth in the conference registration area to drop off a book or to donate money to Open Books. Open Books is a Chicago nonprofit that promotes literacy by providing books and literacy programs to students in grades K - 12.
Chicago Books to Women in Prison
Wednesday, 18 July
5:30 - 7:30 pm
Join the SLA Business & Finance Division and volunteer with Chicago Books to Women in Prison. Those who volunteer will be reading letters from women in prison, and selecting and packing items that fit their requests. By giving just a little of your time you can help incarcerated women in this country experience the world of books and reading. We would encourage participants to also bring a paperback book to donate to CBWP's inventory. The genres of books most needed are dictionaries, Wicca, lesbian literature, African-American literature, and Chicano literature.
Chicago Books to Women in Prison is located at 3435 Sheffield Ave, #206A, Chicago, IL 60657.
After the project, there will be an optional no-host dinner at an area restaurant. Please send your name and contact information to Bobbi Weaver at if you would like to participate.
Not coming to Chicago? While we will definitely miss you, you can still help CBWP from wherever you. Please consider donating a needed paperback book to CBWP. Better World Books, an SLA exhibitor, offers free shipping on all orders. A list of suggested titles with shipping info can be found here.
And, did you know...
Each year the Engineering Division does a raffle and donates to a local charity. This year they have chosen Sit, Stay, Read. Sit, Stay, Read brings dogs into inner city classrooms and community centers so that children can read to the dogs. Sounds kind of silly until you see that the children's reading gets much better!
