Candidate Question: When did you first join SLA? What made you decide to join then, and why do you still belong today?
I joined SLA in 1998, two years after I completed my library degree.
I was encouraged to join by my supervisor. She was an active AALL member and believed strongly in the importance of professional development. She also thought it would be good for our organization to have the exposure of two associations and the networking and educational benefits that came with those memberships.
A few months later I moved into a "solo" position within the same organization and the need for local support through SLA Chapter members was critical. The ability to get great international connections and high level education at the Annual Conference was a reason to join. Getting the support and networking at the local level was my reason to continue.
And then came the leadership opportunities. Thanks to the benefits I received as a member, I felt the need to provide some payback. I began accepting the volunteer opportunities that were being offered starting with committees and local events and gradually working my way up to more responsible roles.
SLA is my professional home. I have great friends throughout the organization and I know that I can rely on SLA to meet a professional need when it arises.

I'd be interested in hearing. The TOS seems rather clear that it is not unless expressly approved by Amazon. I guess if the library got it in writing then they would be ok.
