The SLA Student and Academic Affairs Advisory Council (SAAAC) annually recognizes and honors those SLA student groups who demonstrate outstanding leadership, provide innovative programming, and display creative use of electronic resources.
This year, the University of North Texas/California State University Northridge (UNT/CSUN) won for Outstanding Leadership. Last fall, just three months after the first cohort began, they became an official SLA student group. Their goal is to learn more about special librarianship by providing opportunities to visit libraries, sponsoring speakers, and attending local and association events. The UNT/CSUN Student Group is also encouraging members to write for professional publications and actively apply for scholarship and grants. Of the 50 students in the cohort 21 are SLA student members!
The Innovative Programming award went to the University of Los Angeles (UCLA). They sponsored a variety of programs, including Information Studies Night at Dodger Stadium which drew over 120 attendees! The UCLA student group also brought together information professionals and students in a career panel, partnered with the newly-formed SLA student chapter at UNT/CSUN, and promoted volunteer and philanthropic opportunities to group members through a Philanthropy Panel.
Catholic University of America (CUA) won the merit award for Creative Use of Electronic Resources. They provide expanded opportunities for student communication and collaboration both through its own efforts and in collaboration with the Washington, D.C. Chapter. The CUA Group has maintained its own Web site for a number of years. During the past year, it has also established presences on both Facebook and LinkedIn.
