U.S. News & World Report has once again tagged "librarian" as a hot career for 2009!
Special librarian. All sorts of organizations need librarians, not just public libraries. They work for colleges, law firms, hospitals, prisons, corporations, legislatures, the military, and nonprofit agencies. In fact, special librarianship is the field's fastest-growing job market. Unlike public and university jobs, which require night and weekend hours, these jobs are mostly 9 to 5.
The conversation in the comments section is quickly growing, with many references to careers in special libraries or in corporate information as lucrative options. Check it out and share your thoughts below!

I have found it extremely difficult to get a (library) job in the past 2 years so I'd love to hear where they get the data that there are all these jobs out there. Are they all in New Orleans and Quatar, two places I've seen multiple jobs posted from recently?

I second your opinion. The market is flooded, lib schools need to reduce admissions.
I've been out for 5 years, now a contractor, pay is not close to what hoped for. "Benefits" are abysmal. But I digress...

I hate to add to the negativity but I have two friends who were management level pharma librarians and they've been out of work abd actively looking for 18 months. It took me a year to get my new job so I too would love to know where they're getting their info. I see fewer jobs and much lower pay.

Every time I hear this, it makes me crazy. I was managing a special library. I have been looking for nearly two years. There are so many experienced librarians applying for each library opening in an academic, public, or school library that as a special librarian, I have no chance of getting as far as a phone screen. I have had about two phone screens and two interviews in the entire time.
